About:Chinese Consulate in Melbourne

Hi,

me and my partner are travelling from Aastralia to Colombo via Hong Kong, on a non-Australian passport. transit times are less than 24hrs to Colombo and also from Colombo to Australia. When I called the consulate, the lady said we require a visa. Also our travel agent said we need a visa but another said we don't. I'm awfully confused!
can you please tell me if we require a visa and if we do, do we need to apply for the double entry visa?

You don't need a visa for transitting from HK, since Australia passport holders are free of visa to HK for up to 90 days.

Sorry for my mistake, Sri Lanka passport holders do need a visa to HK for whatever purpose including those who are in transit and remain on the airside.

I called the Chinese consulate yesterday to ask them if i need a transit visa & they said because the transit is less than 12hrs and not leaving the airport, we don't need a visa.
but what if once we land there, they ask for a visa and not let us board to the next flight?
there is no information regarding this on the chinese consulate web site and it's very difficult to get through to someone at the chinese consulate
