If you are not rich in time, my suggestion is that you can take a tour, which is cost-efficient and time-saving. If you have plenty of time, you can travel by yourself, this website could be a good websie to introduce you the attractions for each city, you can have a look if you have time.The best way might  be Malaysia--Haihou--Hongkong-Macau--Guangzhou--Guilin--Chengdu--Hangzhou--Shanghai--Tianjin--Beijing. I think you should add xian to your intenary which will definetly impress you a lot! Have a good time!
