Hi Steve,

Most times in China you need to book a couple of days ahead - especially for a long trip. Buying tickets if you don't know mandarin is kinda hard - but if you prepare beforehand by writing down the train number, the date you want to travel, and the type of travel (suggest Soft Sleeper - Lower bunk (which is a little more expensive) - it'll make things a lot easier. Staff at your hotel can help you write this stuff down. Oh! Don't forget to take earplugs for an overnight train. Nanning is great - stay at the Yong Jiang Hotel - about $60 bucks a night for 5 star. Cheers Andrew, Melbourne

hi Steven,

I think it is better to take flight from Shanghai to Nanning, as the train will take 27 to 29 hours. If you choose train, you'd better to book the train tickets with the local agent or hotel in advance. I am afraid that you can not get the tickets on the departure day, as the train tickets in China are always under great demand, especially now is during the Summer Holiday.

Hi, Mr. Steve, when will your flight land on Shanghai PVG? If you arrive late, it is quite difficult for you to buy it upon your arrival. Since few staff there can speak English in the railway station, it is quite hard for you to communicate directly. Besides, you need to wait if there are many people queue there, which is a little bit time-consuming. Sometimes, the tickets selling window might has been closed. While you may get the train ticket if you are lucky enough. Thus, you are suggested to stay in Shanghai for one night if you arrive late and you can book the train tickets from the hotel information desk with certain service charge, which is very convenient. Good luck!

For the flight of Shanghai/ Nanjing you mentioned, since it is only about 300 kilometers from Shanghai to Nanjing, there is no flight available.

If you go to Nanjing, Confucius Temple (Fuzimiao), Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum should not miss. Hope you have a good time there!

Hi, Mr. Steve, sorry that I mistook Nanning as Nanjing. You may check what Mr. Lu offered.
