If you do not have a job in China, you are not allowed to stay for a longer time. Currently in your case, you can obtain only a tourist visa which has a duration of stay of only 30 days. You have to exit China every 30 days to get a new China visa.

You are not permitted to work privately in the way you describe...this is common to most countries. However, what you are suggesting is not uncommon but you would be doing it illegally. If the authorities decide to have a purge you could be deported..politely!

I do not agree with Mr Bob'a comment that you can only get a 1 month visa. As a US citizen you should ask for a 12 month mult-entry tourist visa which will require you to leave the country every 3 months. List cities that you want to visit and include neighbouring 'countries' such as HK, Macau, and Vietnam to justify the need for multiple entry. Once in China you will undoubtedly make contacts. Then you have the possibility of getting a 6 month F visa (business) which does not have the requirement to leave the country after 3 months. You should note that this visa still does not give you the right to work for income in China. Don't concern ourself about the how and why of all this, just get there first!
