Mrs mary,
With an L visa, you probably can not get a resident permit for your stay of a longer time in China. Yourr children are studying in China, do they have X visa?(I assume they should have X visas for their study in China). If they have X visas, you could apply for a long-term resident permit.

Sorry, Mrs mary, I have never heard that applicants can apply for an X visa after they have entered the Chinese border and have studied in China. I am afraid that you have to exit from China to get X visas for your children. You could probably apply for a dependent visa or the same visa as your kids for accompanying them in China. Hopelly, some knowledgeable visa experts here can help you.
