It is quite straightforward. You can visit Shenzhen by taking a MTR train, East Rail Line to Lo Wu. In Lo Wu you will cross Hong Kong exit immigration and when asked, you will tell them that you travel to Shenzhen and that you will apply for a Shenzhen 5 day visa on arrival. They will allow you to proceed and you will briefly walk to the mainland Chinese facility called Luohu. At Luohu facility you will look for visa office. There you will apply for a Shenzhen 5 day visa on arrival (usually called Shenzhen VOA). There you will use automatic photography machines and you will fill out the form. Also, you will pay 130 CNY (by bank card or with mainland Chinese cash) a visa fee. You will also fill out arrival card and perform fingerprinting at automatic fingerprinting machine. You will then receive a stamp/sticker of Shenzhen VOA in your passport. When you are done, you will proceed to the immigration and finally to Shenzhen to enjoy your time on your own. When your visit to Shenzhen is over, you will return to Hong Kong by taking any border crossing and any mean of transport, high speed train included. You can return by using the very same border crossing you have used to enter Shenzhen. Have a nice visit to Shenzhen.
