Yes, your itinerary is eligible for 240 hour visa free transit, but you should take care that your flight from Australia to China does not have a landing of any kind in Indonesia because you will have Indonesia in your itinerary during your return flight itinerary.
The citizens of Australia do not need a visa to travel to China for a stay of up to 30 days, but your Indonesian friend can use 240 hour visa free transit. Upon landing in China he will have one procedure more than you and that would be to approach 24/240 hour visa free transit counter where he will present her/his flight itinerary (tickets) and itinerary while in China. She/he will get a temporary entry permit and after that you will go together through the immigration. Also, I recommend, please, use correct terminology because this is not a transit visa, but 240 hour visa free transit, so there is no visa of any kind at all. Have a nice visit to China.
