About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

London -Beijing-London

I am traveling to Beijing to meet up with family arriving 28th December and leaving on 3rd January. As this isn’t strictly 3rd country can I still get visa free entry?

Unfortunately, this is not possible. The rule that is strictly implemented clearly states that the immediate points before and after mainland China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories Eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. In other words, a flight UK - mainland China - UK is not considered a transit and to perform such an itinerary a Chinese visa obtained in advance is a must.

I understand you have a very limited time to spend it with your family, but maybe you could think to insert a same day round trip to, for example, Seoul in South Korea on a separate ticket. Like this you could create an eligible itinerary. For example:

London - Beijing - Seoul
Seoul - Beijing - London

I understand that this is loss of one day and also an additional expense, but an itinerary of this kind allows you to enjoy visa free travel. Alternatively, if you retain the original itinerary you will have to obtain a Chinese tourist (L) visa in advance. In any case, I wish you a wonderful stay with your family.
