About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travel from London to Taiwan with layover at Shanghai

Hi,
We are traveling from London to Taipei and have a layover of 5 hours in Shanghai. We are UK passport holders. Are we eligible for the 24 hour transit visa?

Actually, you are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit. This is something different than 24 hour transit visa. You should not worry because you do not need a visa of any kind. When you land in Shanghai you will just walk from one to the other gate and you do not need to perform any formality. Also, you do not need to fill out any forms. It is important to understand that you will not be a subject of immigration or customs inspections as well. You will just encounter a security check between the two gates. You will spend your layover time airside (in the transit area) of Shanghai airport. Have a nice journey.

Thanks a lot for this! Also one more question, while returning, I have 9 hours halt, could I use the 24 hour transit visa and go and visit Shanghai for 3-4 hours?

Yes, you may try to get the 24h temporary entry permit at the immigration counter. But I'm not sure if the staff will give you one, because 9-hour-layover is really tight for a city tour from and back to the airport. If they give you one, just remember to return to the airport for your flight in time.
