visa and baggage during transit

I travel with China southern airline, from Osaka to Penang transit Guangzhou for 23 hours and i hold a Malaysian passport which i can entry China for 30 visa free.
Do i need to apply for 240 hour transit free visa?
I have a check in baggage. In this case, can I still request the airline direct me baggage to Penang without pick it up in guangzhou when transit?

Both 24h/240h visa-free transit and the 30-day visa free entry applies to you, and immigration staff will decide the type. Normally your luggage can be checked through to Penang.
