About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

10 Day Transit Visa

I have US passport and would like to see if I would be eligible for the 144 hours transit free visa from this itinerary:
US drive to Canada then fly to Shanghai. From Shanghai fly back to Canada and then drive back to the US.

No, because flying Canada-Shanghai-Canada is still a return journey; driving up and down to and from the US is an irrelevant portion of your trip to Chinese immigrations authorities - TWOV only applies by manner of arriving from country A to China and then exiting directly to country C. For example: Canada-China-USA would be ok - you can also refer back to the chart at the top of the page for reference.

Unfortunately, your itinerary is not eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. The basic rule clearly states that the immediate points before and after mainland China are located im two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see, both of your immediate points are located in just one country - Canada. You simply have to create an itinerary that has its immediate points before and after mainland China in two different countries. For example to travel from US to China and from China to Canada. I hope you can find a suitable solution.
