About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

10 Days Transit from US

We are planning a trip in March 2026 from the US. Will we be eligible for the 10 Days visa free transit?

US to Beijing via Taipei (transit without stopover) arriving on March 8th.
Shanghai back to US via Taipei (transit / do we need to make a stopover - if stopover is required, can it be just for a few hours and then departing for US on the same day?) departing on March 18th.

Thank you!

Am I correct in assumption that you plan to have Taipei immediately before and also immediately after mainland China? If so, your itinerary is not eligible. The basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit strictly requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China are located in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see, both of your immediate points are located in just one territory - Taiwan. If you plan to retain such an itinerary, you would have to obtain a Chinese visa in advance. However, with just a little bit of creativity you can make your itinerary eligible by introducing a country or eligible territory into equation. For example, you can fly: US - Taipei - Shanghai - Hong Kong - Taipei - US or US - South Korea - Shanghai - Taipei - US or US - Shanghai - Taipei - US. There are several good combinations, so you can really do that in order to make your itinerary an eligible one. I hope you will find a suitable way how to make your itinerary eligible for 240 hour visa free transit.
