About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Route for 240 Transit

Do you know how this affects airline employees traveling standby? Do we need a confirmed ticket or can we travel without showing an assigned seat at the time they check?

For example: USA (Seattle, WA) to Shanghai nonstop. Return Shanghai - Japan
- USA. Both would be standby tickets. If this is not allowed, I will purchase a ticket from Shanghai to Japan. Thanks for your help!

Brittani, standby tickets are not allowed, but just the confirmed ones. Also, when you mention the seat this is a bit a clumsy wording meaning - a confirmed ticket. In other words, you really have to book and have confirmed just Shanghai to Japan ticket and enjoy 240 hour visa free transit in China because only this ticket is essential for determining your 240 hour visa free transit eligibility. You will be asked to present exactly this ticket in both US (Seattle) at the time of your check-in and upon your landing in Shanghai. Just to conclude, your are fine with your entire travel plan, but with Shanghai to Japan ticket as a confirmed one. Have a nice journey.
