About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

British Passport travelling to Hong Kong transiting in Beijing

Hi, I hold a UK passport and bought my flights with Cathay Pacific flying from London Heathrow Airport to Beijing for 9 days. (It stops over at Hong Kong for a few hours.) My outbound flight is from Beijing to Hong Kong where I will be staying for 10 days then direct flight back to London do I require a China Visa?

Unfortunately, this is not possible because the basic rule of 240 (and 24 as well) hour visa free transit requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see, both of your immediate points are in Hong Kong. In other words, if you retain your itinerary in current form you will have to obtain a Chinese visa in advance. If your ticket allows you to make some changes, you could make your itinerary eligible for 240 hour visa free transit by introducing Macau into equation in the way that you fly Macau to Beijing or Beijing to Macau. You will easily connect Hong Kong with Macau by ferry or bus. So, if you can it would be ideal to fly London to Beijing via Hong Kong and when you are done with you visit/stay in Beijing to take a direct flight to Macau. From Macau you will immediately take a ferry to Hong Kong. Like this you would have your immediate points in two different eligible territories - Hong Kong and Macau and consequently your itinerary would be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. Hopefully, you can adapt your itinerary in a painless way in order to be in line with 240 hour visa free transit rules. Have a nice journey.
