Booking a train ticket

I am planning a trip to Inner Mongolia this summer and I plan to take the international train from Hohhot to Ulan Bator. I would like to buy the train ticket for visa application, but I read online that they can only be purchased at the Hohhot train station. Is there any way to book online or through a travel agent? Thanks!

Cooper, I’m sorry to say that there is no other way to book tickets besides on-site purchase because your original passport is needed, and copies don’t work.

Do tickets sell out for the train? Is it important to arrive in Hohhot early to buy tickets or can you buy them the same day as departure?

You are advised to buy tickets as early as possible for a smooth trip especially during Chinese and Mongolian holidays. Although it’s not as popular as other routes, only 2 departures are offered every week, and it is available 15 days in advance.
