Actually, it is not a visa, but 240 hour visa free transit. There is no visa at all. So, if you are a citizen of 54 eligible countries, US is included, you can use 240 hour visa free transit scheme, but you should be aware that the immediate points before and after mainland China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Hong Kong). In other words, only the immediate points before and after mainland China are important in this regard. For example, an eligible itinerary is Tokyo - Shanghai - Guangzhou - Jakarta or Los Angeles - Beijing - Hong Kong or similar... Since there are no direct flights between China and Malawi, it is important that your itinerary is in rule with these immediate points, for example you can fly from US to China, stay in China for 240 hours by visiting several places and then you have to exit to some country from where you will proceed toward Malawi.I hope this explanation was useful for your needs and I wish you a pleasant journey.
