Am I eligible? One-way tickets.

I am going to go to Guangzhou on Feb 24 and plan to return on Feb 28, I am hoping to benefit from the 144 Visa Free program. My question is I booked a one-way ticket that goes US > Japan (14 hr layover) > Guangzhou. Then, I booked a separate one-way that goes back from Guangzhou > South Korea (4 hr layover) > US. Will this be okay? Or will I have issues since I did not book connecting flights between the destinations?
