About:China Visa Application in USA

Hello.. I live in California travelling to Beijing for 6 days

Hello... I live in California with a US passport travelling to Beijing for 6 day (Greatwall Marathon from May14 to19, 2025) with a few hours layover to Hong Kong. Do I need to apply for a visa for a 6 days stay?

What's your next destination after Beijing? And you mean you have a stopover when flying to Beijing from California? If your itinerary is California - HK - Beijing - HK - California, you need to apply for a normal Chinese visa in advance. If it is California - HK - Beijing - City of third country like California, just apply for the 240-hour visa-free stay permit upon arrival with your passport and the ticket leaving China.
