About:China Visa Application in USA

Visit China for 10 days as tourist

US Citizen traveling for vacation from US to Indonesia then to China(shanghai) for 10 days, then to Indonesia, then go back to US. Should the US citizen need tourist visa for china?

Yes, you need a visa for this itinerary because you travel from Indonesia and back to Indonesia from Shanghai which is not eligible for the 240h visa free transit. I advise to fly directly back to US or with a layover in other countries except for Indonesia.
