About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

We are looking to fly from UK to Hong Kong then travel to Beijing overland for 10 days. Fly to South Korea then onto Japan and return to Shanghai 8 days later. Then travel overland from Shanghai to Hong Kong for another 10 days. Is this route ok to travel as we are spending 10 days in China, leaving for 8 days and then flying back to Shanghai and leaving from Hong Kong to travel back to the UK.

Under the 240-hour visa-free transit policy, only the stops before and after Chinese Mainland matter. The route HK - Beijing - South Korea is an eligible itinerary. But you mention travel overland. Is it by train from HK West Kowloon Station? This is sadly not an eligible travel method because both HK West Kowloon and Beijing West Railway Stations are not eligible ports. A solution is: taking a ferry from HK to Shenzhen Shekou, which is an eligible port, then connect to train from Shenzhen to Beijing.

Your second segment Japan - Shanghai - HK is an eligible route, too. But as you don't mention how long you will stay this time, I need to figure out that if it is less than 24 hours, you will get a 24-hour visa-free stay permit; if longer than 24 hours, it will be another 240-hour visa-free stay. This time, it does not matter which port you will use to leave, so you can travel overland by train from Shanghai to HK, just remember to have the train ticket confirmation in hand when landing in Shanghai from Japan.
