M Visa or F visa

I a deciding which visa works best for me. I started a company and will be collaborating with a researchers in China . The nature of the research and industry means that results generallly take 6 months to 2.5 years( depending on the methods that are used). I also have a cat. I am just unsure of which visa to choose and the needed steps to retake to get my cat and his paperwork ready for china.

Will you get paid during the research? If yes, I think you need a work visa for this long-term stay.
