Esther, it is not a visa, but 240 hour visa free transit scheme. In other words, there is no any visa at all. Consequently, there is no any cost. When you land in China the first thing that you will do will be to approach 24/240 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit by presenting your flight tickets and your hotel booking for at least the first overnight. This is all free of any charge. When your permit is granted, you will head to the immigration and after that outside the airport to enjoy your time on your own.

Thanks. But what if I only wanted to do a day trip? Is that not doable with the VOA?

Esther, but you have explicitly asked about 240 hour visa cost. There is only 240 hour visa free transit. VOA is really available and it is called 5 day Shenzhen visa on arrival. So, here we speak about two totally different things. Indeed, if you plan to take just a day trip to Shenzhen, then 5 day Shenzhen VOA is the way to go. You can really take a ferry from Hong Kong to Shekou, apply there for 5 day Shenzhen VOA, pay 130 CNY by car and proceed to Shenzhen. You are definitely allowed to return back to Hong Kong by train. The most convenient train station for that is Futian because it is very centrally located. If you plan to take a later train from Futian to Hong Kong, it is advisable to book that ticket a couple of days in advance. By the way, the most convenient ferry from Hong Kong is the one departing at 09:00. It takes roughly 1 hour to reach Shekou, so not such a big problem. Also, you cannot use 240 hour visa free transit by doing a day trip with departure from Hong Kong and return to Hong Kong. When you want to use 240 hour visa free transit, you have to stay longer than 24 hours in mainland China and you have to exit to Macau. In your case, it is 5 day Shenzhen VOA the way to go. Have a nice visit to Shenzhen.
