About:Chinese Embassy in South Korea

US citizen living in South Korea

I currently live in T/Daegu, South Korea with a valid US passport. I wish to visit Shanghai for 8 days in April 2025. How do I apply for a tourist visa without returning to the US?

You can apply for a China visa at the visa center if you are a long-term resident there and have a legal resident permit. Actually you can take advantage of the 144h visa free transit policy to get a 6 days' stay in Shanghai to avoid application by flying directly to Shanghai from South Korea and leave for the US or other countries or region except for South Korea.
