it is possible to reserve an entire soft sleeper compartment?

We are a family of 3 adults. We have to take a K train with soft sleeper (from Shanghai to Zhangjiajie and return - K71 and K1374 trains). Is it possible to reserve the entire compartment maybe paying 4 tickets? If so have I to put the same name and passport for two soft sleeper? Will I be shure that the reservation system will put us in the same compartment?Thak youBest regards

It's possible but you need to  book as early as possible with 4 passports and take the 4 passports when take the trains. As for the extra passport, you may use the one of your family member's. One passport can only buy one sleeper. It's not guaranteed to be in the same compartment because there may be no empty compartment left if you book  late.

If I buy 4 tickets with 4 passports to have the compartment but we are only 3, do we still have to show the passport of the person who is not travelling to get on the train? Or reasonably the fourth non-traveller will simply not have shown up?

There is no need for the fourth non-traveler to show up. But you'd better travel with his or her passport. The railway staff will check the passport onboard. If you cannot provide the 4th passport, they get to know the passenger misses the train and they may sell the sleeper to another passenger in the seat carriage.
