About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144-hour permit or 24-hours permit by using train

I will go to Dhaka, Kunming and Tokyo

After obtaining the 144 Hour visa free transit permit at Kunming Airport, I will stay in Kunming for 5 days.

Is it possible to fly from Kunming to Tokyo via Shanghai?

The airline I use told me the following:

・144 hour visa free transit should be direct flights from airports in Yunnan province to go to other country.
・Multiple stops that has domestic transit within China such as Shanghai are not eligible for 144-Hour visa free transit.
・Either the country of departure or arrival via China must be the country of your nationality.

I think the above three points are misunderstandings by the airline, what do you think?

Actually, I have already booked a flight from Kunming to Tokyo via Shanghai.

Airline says I need to buy a new direct way ticket for Tokyo

Even if the airline is wrong, I would not be able to take flight without their permission.
Then, Im thinking to make new plan.

24 Hour visa free transit is known for multiple stops.

So, after staying in Kunming for 4 days, enter Laos by the China Laos Railway,
And then get a 24 hour visa free transit at Mohan railway station.
From the train station, move to Kunming Airport to Shanghai Airport within 24 hours to go to Tokyo.

I think this would work..Do you think it’s possible?

Nori, unfortunately, your itinerary is not eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. When you travel on 144 hour visa free transit you are not allowed to have two mainland Chinese stops in a row. Having more than one stop is allowed only under 24 hour visa free transit scheme.

Also, the basic rule of 144 hour visa free transit clearly states that the immediate points before and after your mainland Chinese stop have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau).

In other words, the airline is correct in all, but the last point because the itinerary does not have to have a country of your origin citizenship. You can fly, like Japanese citizen, from Vietnam to China to Malaysia if you want. It is not necessary that one of the immediate points has to be Japan. In general, it is never wise to ask airline about this stuff because they will always take a line of defense. It is only Timatic that is relevant in this regard.

Your idea to take a train from Kunming to is not eligible at least not at the time being and as soon it is not published as eligible port on the official website of NIA. My suggestion for you would be to take a flight from Kunming to Hong Kong and then a flight from Hong Kong to Shanghai. In any case, you have to change your itinerary because the actual one definitely requires a visa obtained in advance.
