About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Connecting Flight Guangzhou

Hello

Hope you can clarify for me – I will be traveling through China 1-3 Jan (so ca 72hrs), and was wondering if I need a visa for the below trip:

Arrival: Ho Chi Min City – (Guangzhou) – Beijing (connecting flight via Guangzhou) on 1 January, arriving 21:00 in Beijing

Departure: Beijing – (Amsterdam) – Stockholm on 3 January at 12:00

Can I get the 72hrs visa on arrival in Guangzhou even with Beijing being final destination?

Or will I need a tourist visa before I leave for this trip?

Unfortunately, you will have to obtain a Chinese tourist visa in advance because you will have two mainland Chinese stops in the row and that is something that is not allowed under 144 hour visa free transit. You are informed that 72 hour visa free transit was replaced in both Guangzhou and Beijing in favor of 144 hour visa free transit years ago.

The essence of 72/144 hour visa free transit is that the immediate points before and after your mainland Chinese stop have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). Hopefully you will be able to alter/adapt your flight itinerary to those rules and if you cannot do that, you will really have to obtain a Chinese visa in advance.
