About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Guangdong

Hong Kong to and back from Kaiping, Guangdong , Canadian passport

I have a return flight from Vancouver to Hong Kong. I want to visit Kaiping in Guangdong and Macau in this trip as well. In order to qualify for the 144 hours Guangdong visa free transit, can you suggest a route for us to to go from Hong Kong to Kaiping to Macau to Hong Kong or vice versa by boat or bus or train? We are leaving in November 2, 2024. Thank you for your help

Yes, this is quite easy to accomplish under 144 hour visa free transit.

Since your departure point in this regard is Hong Kong, you will take a ferry from Hong Kong to Shekou port in Shenzhen. The best option is to take the first morning ferry.

Remember that even before your departure from Hong Kong you will have to have a ferry ticket from Sheou port to Macau in your hand and you should print it out. This is the proof that you will be in a real transit through Guangdong province between Hong Kong and Macau.

Upon arrival in Shekou port you will present your itinerary and obtain a temporary entry permit. After that you will take a metro to Futian station or a taxi to Shenzhen North station. From there take a high speed train to Guangzhou South station and from Guangzhou South station to Kaiping. There is a direct train from Shenzhen to Kaiping, but you cannot catch it since it departs in the morning. Never mind because the change of trains in Guangzhou South station is very easy.

After your stay in Kaiping you can take one of two direct afternoon trains from Kaiping to Shenzhen or again take a Guangzhou South station as a transfer point between Kaiping to Shenzhen. When the time arrives you will take exactly that ferry from Shekou to Macau that you have you have bought in advance. Have a nice journey.

Thank you for your help. My flight lands in HKIA at 10:30am, can I catch the ferry from the sky pier ferry terminal to Shekou the same morning without going thru Hong Kong Immigration and can still get the 144 hour visa free transit? Will that give me time to get to Keiping by evening? Can I also buy and confirm the return ferry from Shekou to Macau at the ticket office in HKIA?
I also wonder if it is possible to leave Kaiping by going to Zhuhai border to Macau instead of backtracking to Shekou? Are there buses I could buy and with confirmation for this route?

Yes, you can depart from Skypier directly to Shekou or to Nansha ferry terminal that is closer to Guangzhou and to Kaiping in the first place. Fro example you can take a metro from Nansha Passenger Port by line 4 until Higher Education Mega Center South and there change to line 7 until Guangzhou South Railway station. From there, you will take a train to Kaiping.

As far as your second question is concerned, you can take some other option different than Shekou to Macau ferry, but you should be aware that you will have to produce a confirmed ticket that you will have to present to the authorities in either Shekou or Nansha that will take you directly from mainland China to Macau. In other words, your bus or alternative ferry has to go from Guangdong province directly to Macau under one ticket and without a change at the border crossing.

I am aware of Zhuhai airport to Macau through bus and here you can produce a ticket by buying it online even before you have reached Shekou or Nansha, but I do not know if that option would be convenient for your needs. I have heard for some other through bus options, but personally, I do not have an experience with them and also cannot say more about them. You should just take care that your transport option has to be done on a public scheduled, through service over the border crossing and that you can produce your ticket even before you arrive at Shekou or Nansha border crossings.
