Visa Options for Traveling from Hong Kong to Guangzhou via Shenzhen

Hello,

I am a Swedish passport holder planning to travel from Hong Kong to Mainland China. Here are my travel details:

Entry into China: By rail from Hong Kong to Shenzhen on Monday, October 21st, 2024.
Stay Duration: October 21st to October 26th.
Departure from China: I have a confirmed flight leaving Guangzhou for Taipei on Saturday, October 26th, 2024.
Purpose: Tourism and to catch my flight from Guangzhou.

My questions are:

Can I use the Shenzhen 5-Day Visa on Arrival (VOA) to enter Shenzhen on October 21st and then travel to Guangzhou to catch my flight on October 26th?

If the Shenzhen 5-Day VOA does not allow travel to Guangzhou, what are my options for legally traveling from Shenzhen to Guangzhou during this period?

Is there a visa-free transit policy or any other visa option that would allow me to enter China from Hong Kong, stay in both Shenzhen and Guangzhou from October 21st to October 26th, and then depart from Guangzhou to Taipei?

What would be the best visa option for me to consider in this situation?

Thank you for your assistance!

Jani, here are the answers:

1. You cannot use Shenzhen 5 days visa on arrival because this one limits you to just Shenzhen city limits. However, you will use a ferry from Hong Kong to Shekou port in Shenzhen by a direct ferry. It is important that you say to the Shekou border officials that you have arrived under 144 hour visa free transit and not 5 days Shenzhen VOA and you will present them your flight ticket from Guangzhou to Taipei. After a short check, you will be granted a temporary entry permit (not a visa) that permits you to enter China, but you are limited with to 6 days and to Guangdong province. This means that you can move around the entire province, Guangzhou included and to take a flight from Guangzhou to Taiwan. You should be aware that you will really have to take that flight you have presented to the border officials.

2. I am more than positive that the above explanation covers your second question as well.

3. The third question is also explained above.

I think that you have quite a clear and straightforward situation and, please, have in mind that the Hong Kong border authorities will also ask you to present them your exit ticket from Guangdong province at the time when you will board the boat for Shekou port in Shenzhen. So far, taking a train is not yet clearly marked as an eligible way to enter China under 144 hour visa free transit scheme, so stick to the boat.
