About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong to Shanghai to Macau for British passport holder

Hi, if I were to book a multi city flight such that I depart from Hong Kong to Shanghai, stay in Shanghai for 5 nights and fly from Shanghai to Macau, would this be ok as per 144 hour transit rule? The important thing is that I will have 2 separate airline tickets booked separately - the 144 rule conditions are met by way of arriving from and departing region being different however it’s a multi city flight not a transit flight. If anyone has done this please guide me. Thanks

This is perfectly doable and eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Trust me, you are among a nice number of those who use exactly this creative option to visit several mainland Chinese cities.

Your intention to use two separate tickets and two unrelated airlines is also acceptable and you should only have in mind that you are not allowed to have any additional landing anywhere in mainland China beside in Shanghai transit area. When talking about Shanghai transit area you can use one airport for your arrival and another for your departure. For example you can arrive from Hong Kong in Hongqiao airport and depart from Hangzhou or arrive in Pudong and depart from Ningbo... This is fine and acceptable, but you cannot have an itinerary to look like Shanghai - Beijing - Macau.

I know you understand me, so just proceed with your travel plans and enjoy in your journey.
