About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Chengdu

144 hour transit with round trip from a foreign country

I am an American citizen and passport holder. If I am in a foreign country (thailand), can I travel round trip from thailand to chengdu and take advantage of the 144 hr visa free policy? Can country A and C be the same foreign country?

No, this is not possible. If there is not C country that is different from A country, this is not a transit, but just a simple return trip. In this case, you would have to obtain a Chinese visa in advance.

However, you can be somewhat creative and make an itinerary that will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit by inserting a country that will act as country C. In my opinion the most convenient option would be to do something like this:

Thailand - Chengdu - Hong Kong - Thailand

or

Thailand - Hong Kong - Chengdu - Thailand

There are probably several more options by introducing some other eligible country/territory and consequently making your itinerary an eligible one.
