About:Visa on Arrival

HK to Shenzhen & Shanghai (on UK passport)

I am a UK passport holder on a work VISA in Hong Kong. Can I get the high speed rail from Hong Kong to Shenzhen & get the 5-Day VISA on arrival? If so what station should I get on & off at (i.e., West Kowloon to Shenzhen North Station...or another route?)

Also, my friend is staying in Shanghai & at some point I want to visit him for a weekend. I would fly to Shanghai. What is the VISA process?

Thanks

Tom, if you want to visit Shenzhen by using Shenzhen 5 days VOA, you cannot take any through train in direction toward Shenzhen. You can use Lo Wu (Luohu) border crossing and obtain a visa for 130 CNY right at the border crossing. You can also use Huanggang border crossing and if you want the most comfortable option you will use Shekou border crossing by taking a ferry from Hong Kong to Shekou. Opening hours of visa offices are:

Lo Wu (Luohu) and Huanggang - 9:00 - 16:30
Shekou - 9:00 - 13:00 & 14:30 - 16:30

As far as your second question is concerned, probably the best idea is to use 144 hour visa free transit. You can take a flight from Hong Kong to Shanghai, stay there for up to 6 days and then take a flight to Macau. When you land in Macau you will just proceed back to Hong Kong. Of course, you can even start your journey in Macau and terminate in Hong Kong, as you wish. It is just important that your flights are of nonstop kind. You will have to obtain a return flight even before you depart withe the first one toward Beijing. You can use this 144 hour visa free transit scheme as much as you wish.

Thank you for your response. I did make it to Shenzhen & enjoyed my time!

For the Shanghai one, what do you mean by the first one being towards Beijing?

My plan is to fly from Hong Kong to Shanghai, stay for two nights & then fly home by going from Shanghai to Macau. Then I'd take the ferry of course.

Also, for the 144-hour VISA would I just apply for it when I arrive at the airport in Shanghai? What do I have to tell the airline when checking in at Hong Kong airport without a VISA? Or do I get the VISA in advance?

Thanks

Oh I think Borut made a mistake. He should mean you need to have a return flight ticket when leaving for Shanghai.

Your route HK - Shanghai -Macau is perfectly eligible for 144-hour visa-free transit. Upon landing in Shanghai, proceed to the 144-hour immigration counter, show your passport and onward flight ticket to Macau, the staff will give a stamp on your passport and allow you to leave. When boarding the flight in HK, just tell the staff you will make use of the 144-hour visa free transit and they will let you go. Don't worry about it because it has been proved work well by many and many previous travelers.
