About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 hour visa free transit for multi-nation trip

Our family (US citizen) already have plane ticket from NYC to Japan to Korea and back to NYC. We wanted to visit China for few days. If we were to get flight tickets from Korea to Beijing back to Korea, does that meet 144 hour visa free transit? If we need to visit another region, do we need to buy a multi-city ticket or can we do 3 one way ticket? As an example, buy a one way ticket from korea to beijing, buy another one way ticket from beijing to hong kong and another one way ticket from hong kong to korea.

In order to be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit, you have to have two details in mind:

1. Immediate points before and after your mainland China destination (Beijing in your case) have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories: Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau).
2. You are not allowed to have more landings within mainland China in a row.

In other words, itinerary South Korea - Beijing - South Korea is not eligible.

Itinerary South Korea - Beijing - Hong Kong is eligible.

You can also use South Korea - Beijing - Japan because it is closer than Hong Kong.

In any case single tickets are perfectly eligible as well as different airlines and you should not bother yourselves with multi-nation type of ticket(s).

Have a nice journey.
