German citizen can enter Shenzhen and mainland China as he/she wish because German citizens can enter China visa free for a stay of up to 15 days. However, this is not the case with US citizens. US citizens need a Shenzhen visa on arrival and it cannot be obtained by taking a high speed train. There are three border crossings where Shenzhen visas can be obtained. The most convenient one is Shekou if you take the first morning ferry from Hong Kong to Shekou in Shenzhen. Another option is to take a train to Lo Wu (Luohu) border crossing and to apply for a Shenzhen visa there at the price of 130 CNY paid by any global card. If taking Lo Wu (Luohu) it is highly advisable to be there at least at 08:30 because the visa office opens at 09:00, to avoid the majority of the queues. After your visit to Shenzhen you are allowed to return back to Hong Kong by high speed train.
