I always suggest people to take the first morning ferry from Hong Kong to Shekou port in Shenzhen because this is by far the most convenient option due to the longer queues on two other border crossings. The second best is Lo Wu (Luohu) because it is so easy to reach it by train from the center of Hong Kong. However, Lo Wu (Luohu) is quite popular and the queues in front of visa office are inevitable. In other words, it is advisable to reach the border crossing at least at 08:30 because the visa office opening hours are from 09:00 - 16:30. The price for a person for a Shenzhen VOA is 130 CNY.
After your stay in Shenzhen, you can return to Hong Kong by taking any border crossing and any mean of transport you wish, high speed train included.
