About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Guangzhou-Laos-Guangzhou-Hong Kong-London

Hi,
I only have a single entry visa to China on my British passport. After I enter China, I plan to make a trip to Laos. Would I be eligible for the transit visa to return to Guangzhou if I only have the flight ticket Hong Kong to London? I plan to take a train from Guangzhou to Hong Kong. Thank you

Yes, this is definitely doable with just a couple of additional recommendations.

As you have planned, you will enter mainland China on your visa and spend your time in the way you like and exit from Guangzhou to Laos by plane. This part is over and your visa is used and non existent at the time you board the plane to Laos. So, your real visa free transit scheme begins in this segment:

Laos - Guangzhou - Hong Kong

Your idea to reach Hong Kong from Guangzhou by high speed train is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit since recently, but the main problem is in the fact that this detail is not yet loaded into Timatic or in other words, you could encounter a problem if you try to do this because of this administrative delay. In order to travel with absolute peace of mind, I would suggest you to buy a ferry ticket instead. In other words, you will have to buy a ferry ticket through CKS - Chu Kong Passenger Transport Company website even before you depart from Laos. You will print it out and have at hand, ready to be presented to relevant authorities. Two best exit ports for your ferry journey to Hong Kong are Nansha, located south from Guangzhou and reachable by metro or Shekou port in Shenzhen.
