No, you cannot use 144 hour visa free transit in this case, but you can do all those destinations in the following way.
As far as you know, you as UK citizen do not need any kind of visa for Macau and Hong Kong or in other words, Macau and Hong Kong are outside of this option because you can visit them as if you are visiting France.
After your arrival in Hong Kong, you can visit Macau by taking a ferry or a bus without any problem. After your stay in Macau, you will just approach Gongbei border crossing, during opening hours of local visa office and there you will apply for a 3 day Zhuhai visa on arrival. This visa costs 130 CNY and you will pay for it in cashless form. So, you can explore Zhuhai for 3 days and after that take a bus or a ferry to Hong Kong.
As you can see, here you will use Zhuhai 3 day visa on arrival and not 144 hour visa free transit. I hope this option is fine with your travel plans.
