144 hr VISA

Arriving in Shanghai by air from Sydney, Australia, to embark on a cruise that includes stops at Jeju Island, South Korea, three ports in Japan, and then returns to Shanghai (totaling 8 nights). Are both arrivals eligible to apply for the 144-hour visa-free transit for China?

Yes, both arrivals are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit with just one addition... Your immediate point after your second arrival in Shanghai has to be a destination different than Japan because Japan will be your immediate point before Shanghai. In other words, if you depart from Shanghai to Australia on a direct flight this is perfectly fine. If the latter detail is as I have explained, you will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai - twice and no visa is needed. Have a nice journey.
