About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

from US -> Hong Kong -> Guangzhou -> Hong Kong -> US

I have a US passport. I will be flying in to HK, planning to take a train to Guangzhou for a day then back to HK. Will the 24-hour visa-free transit work for this itinerary ?

You can't enjoy the free transit if you take a train to Guangzhou as the only port available for your free transit in Guangzhou is Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.
