About:240-hour Visa-free Transit in Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu

A - B - A Route Not Allowed

If I wanted to do a round trip flight where I travel to Shanghai, stay for a few days, and then travel back to the original city, would it be rejected even if the city is outside of China? For example, Seoul - Shanghai - Seoul ?

This itinerary would be definitely rejected because this is not a transit, but just a return trip. Simply speaking, you need a country/territory C. If I may suggest you, you could use Japan for this purpose in order to make your itinerary eligible. For example:

Seoul - Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, whatever) - Shanghai - Seoul

Like this, you would have been able to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit valid for entire wider Shanghai area.
