About:Visa on Arrival

How Long

Hi there,

I hold an Irish passport. I would like to enter Shenzhen from Hong Kong on Sunday for only 12 hours maximum. I wish to get a VOA. What is the estimated time to wait on this visa? When is the best time to arrive to avoid queuing?

Sinead, the best time to reach the border, if you go by train to Lo Wu (Luohu), is before 09:00 when the visa office opens. It is possible that you will encounter a queue that has already formed there, but this is much better than arriving at some later time and find a hopelessly long queue. When your turn arrives, the procedure is quite straightforward and consists of taking a photo of you by the visa office official and the payment of 275 CNY for Irish citizens, by your card. When asked how long do you plan to say, you can say that you intend to return back to Hong Kong during the same day. You are allowed to return back by taking any border crossing and any mean of transport. Probably the most convenient is a high speed train from Shenzhen to West Kowloon station in Hong Kong, but this is something you will decide.
