About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Lay Over's before Shanghai from USA

Hello! We are thinking of visiting family in Manila from the USA. We came across a video in YouTube of Shanghai and wanted to come see it. We came across the 144 visa while preparing for the trip. It sounds complicated but since the flight from the USA has a 5 hrs lay over either in Japan or South Korea, would we be considered or approved? It states direct flights from one destination to another. Kindly advise and thank you.

If your flight from US to Manila looks like this:

US - Japan (or South Korea) - Manila

And you do not have any other landings of any kind, then you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in wider Shanghai area comprising the city of Shanghai and two provinces, Jiangsu and Zhejiang. In other words, you are free to explore this area for a period of 6 days, absolutely visa free. Also, you can travel on separate tickets and on unrelated airlines. It is important that your itinerary looks as as I have written above. Also, it is important to use correct terminology because this is not 144 hours visa, but 144 hour visa free transit, so there is no visa of any kind at all.

In the end, you did not mention your citizenship, but if you are US citizens, you are eligible to enjoy this scheme.
