Visa on Arrival (Philippine Passport Holder)

I would like to ask regarding the success rate of visa on arrival applications for Philippine passport holders with the following conditions?
-With prior Chinese visa (1-2) in current passport
-Holder of Hong Kong Resident ID

I heard that in general, it can be quite tricky for Philippine passport holders to obtain a visa on arrival, so I would like to be sure first.

Unfortunately, nobody can offer you any guarantee in this regard, but having prior Chinese visas in your current or old passport that you can present or having Hong Kong Resident ID is definitely a good detail that will increase your chances hugely. Just one detail... You are advised to be at Lo Wu (Luohu) border crossing even a bit before 09:00 what the visa office opens because of the queues that form even then and especially later.

As a follow-up, what duration of stay is ideal? Is a one day (or less than one day) trip a viable option or does it have to be more than one day?
