Both your journeys are eligible for visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. Also, there is no limit on how many times within a certain period of time you can use this scheme. In reality, you can to it practically on daily basis...
You did not mention how long will you stay in Beijing during your first journey, but if it is longer than 24 hours, you will enjoy 144 hour visa free transit, but if it is shorter than that then 24 hour visa free transit will apply. In any case, you do not need any kind of visa. During your return journey you will be allowed to exit the airport, but you will just apply for a temporary entry permit upon your landing in Chengdu at the transit counter. This application is for free. I advise you to have your flight tickets printed out and at hand and I also suggest you to have at least the first overnight booked in advance and also at hand as a printout.
By the way, I encourage you to use correct terminology because its is 24/144 hour visa free transit and not 144 h visa... There is no visa at all.
