About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Non transit visit

Hi, we are currently visiting Hong Kong. We have an Australian passport. Does the 72 hour visa free allow for a return trip (less than 72 hours duration) from Hong Kong to Hangzhou? Given this is not technically a “transit” I’m assuming this doesn’t apply but I would like to clarify/confirm. Thanks in advance for your time and help. Regards
Chris.

No, this is not possible because you miss a third country or eligible territory to comply with basic visa free transit rules. However, if you are willing to do just a small adaptation to your journey and introduce Macau, your itinerary of this kind:

Hong Kong - Hangzhou - Macau

Would be definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in wider Shanghai transit area where Hangzhou belongs. One more detail... In Shanghai it is 144 and not 72 hour visa free transit. Also, when you reach Macau, you are free to return to Hong Kong in the way of your choice.
