arriving by cruise ship

I will arrive in Beijing by a cruise ship over night on the ship for 2 nights. should i apply for and L Visa or a Transit visa? thank you.

I will be on a seaborn cruise from Sydney Australia 20 February to Japan 16 April via a number of Asian countries. China Tianjin (Beijing) is one of these stops, arrive at 7am on the 8th April and depart 9 pm, 9th April not sure what visa to get any help appreciated.
