Greetings, am planning a trip to Shenzhen but am also thinking about visiting hong Kong, shenzhen is my arrival and departure city would i need a double entry visa for china or multi entry for me to add Hong Kong to my itinerary?

You don't need any visa to visit HK. However, if you want to visit Shenzhen again from HK, another new visa is needed. So you need a double-entry visa for China.

I read somewhere china doesn't accept tourist visa application that are not accompanied by an invitation letting is this true ?

I haven't heard such news and it is better for you to confirm with local Chinese embassy.
