Yes, you can. However, you have to fulfill one basic rule. If your destination after China is Japan, then you have to arrive to China from any other country different than Japan. In other words, you have to have an eligible itinerary. Also, you have to be aware that you are allowed to stay just within one transit area within China like wider Shanghai area, wider Beijing area, Guangdong province or similar. To be more precise, you need an itinerary of this kind:

US - China - Japan

Between US and China you cannot have a stop in Japan of any kind or better to say, your flight has to be a nonstop one. You can combine here other countries and territories including Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau that act as third countries in this regard. In the end, you can stay in China visa free, if your itinerary is eligible for up to 144 hours.

Hi Cindy,

Checking if I am eligible for 144 visa free to China.
My itinerary is as follows:
US > Taiwan > Xiamen > Xian (will stay one night) > Beijing (layover) > US

Thanks
