Actually, you can do that, but just if you fulfill the following details:
- In order to travel to Hong Kong you will have to stay in Shenzhen at least 24 hours and 1 minute. This means, you will be allowed to exit to Hong Kong if you travel on 144 hour visa free transit and this means that the time between your scheduled arrival in Shenzhen and your scheduled departure to Hong Kong has to be at least 1 minute longer than 24 hours. Also, to exit Shenzhen you would need to take a ferry from Shekou port in Shenzhen to Hong Kong. You would also have to buy your ferry ticket in advance through CKS - Chu Kong Passenger Transport Company website and printout the ticket and have that printout with you as a proof of your transit. Also, you would have to take exactly that ferry you have bough your ticket for.
- To return to Shenzhen, you will have to apply for 5 days Shenzhen visa on arrival. This is not a problem, but since the visa offices on the border are quite congested, I would advise you to take again a ferry from Hong Kong directly to Shekou in Shenzhen. Upon arrival you will obtain a Shenzhen visa on arrival that costs 168 CNY that you can pay by card only. Please, have in mind that the visa office in Shekou opening hours are: 9:00 - 13:00 & 14:30 - 16:30.
- After you arrive in Shenzhen, you will stay there until your flight departure to Vietnam.
