If you want to exit the airport, you will approach 24/144 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit. This is the permit that allows you to exit the airport and to explore Beijing, but you should know that this detail is not a passenger right, but a discretionary right of the airport authorities. Your right is to travel through China visa free, but the exit from the airport is, we can call it a gift or a good will. I cannot predict if the temporary entry permit will be granted to you, but you should, in any case apply for one.
