This is relatively easy to accomplish.
You are correct when taking a flight from Hong Kong to Guangzhou because this is the only eligible way to enter Guangdong province in order to obtain 144 hour visa free transit status. However, in order to be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit, you cannot return directly to Hong Kong, but you will travel by ferry from Shekou port in Shenzhen to Macau. In other words, you will buy a ferry ticket through TurboJet website from Shekou to Macau and print it out. Also, you will have this printout with you to present it to all it whom may concern. In the end, you will have to take exactly that ferry you have bought your ticket for. Like this, you have created a journey that is eligible for 144 hour visa free transit valid for entire Guangdong province:
Hong Kong - Guangdong province - Macau
When you reach Macau, you will easily proceed to Hong Kong.
Also, please, use correct terminology because this is not a visa, but visa free transit, so there is no visa of any kind.
